Simon Calder: key trends for the travel industry

At the lively Q&A, Simon said, "According to the latest forecast from HSBC Global, China is set to pass the US to become the world’s largest economy by 2030. India will leapfrog to third place and the UK correspondingly slips one position down, but is still ahead of France. The size of the British economy is predicted to grow from £3 trillion to £3.5 trillion.

"From the traveller’s perspective, opportunities have never been better - or safety. Since 1995, there has been a 60 per cent increase in safety (which corresponds to a 37.5 per cent reduction in risk) for the average British holidaymaker abroad."

Choice for travellers has expanded dramatically, and fares have fallen in real and, often, absolute terms. All the signs are that the British market will continue to respond to the excellent value offered by the world’s most sophisticated and effective travel industry. But there are many challenges ahead.
